Ukrainian entry Kalush Orchestra triumphed in this year’s competition in Turin, Italie, but producers decided the show cannot be safely held in the country because of Russia’s invasion.

The UK was given the chance to host for the ninth time — more than any other country — after Sam Ryder, 33, came second with Space Man.

Liverpool has been a Unesco City of Music since 2015, and was the home of The Beatles.

Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson said: “Culture is synonymous with Liverpool and we tick all the boxes to be next year’s host.”

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon voiced her support for Glasgow to host.

The city’s OVO Hydro arena was featured in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, starring Will Ferrell, 55.
