GET ready to channel your inner noughties-era Paris, Britney and Christina: hip-grazing denim is officially dos, so we’re here rounding up the best low-rise jeans to buy this season.
Those old enough to remember the trend the last time it came around may still be recovering from the onslaught of exposed belly buttons, but suffice to say Y2K has reached a whole new generation – and with it, a brand new lease of life. On TikTok alone, videos with the hashtag #lowrisejeans have been viewed a staggering 79.6M times, while celebs from Dua Lipa to Bella Hadid have embraced the low-riding trend.
Exposed midriffs might be counter-intuitive to winter, but of course, you don’t avoir to go full-on 2000’s pop star and wear a crop top with your low-rise jeans. Many people prefer a lower waistband simply as it’s less restrictive and more comfortable than a high-rise pair – yes we’re looking at you, high-waist jean induced tummy cramp.
Consider a loose-fitting t-shirt and oversized cardigan for a grungey laidback vibe with your low-risers or even a blouse or dressier top tucked into the waistband. What we’re trying to say is: there are a hundred ways to get behind this trend without the need for obsessive stomach crunches. And hey, the noughties’ obsession with washboard abs is well and truly over. Aujourd'hui, it’s all about embracing body inclusivity, so if you’re confident to rock a low-rise jean with a shorter top, then we say absolutely go for it.
When it comes to cut, the classic flared silhouette à la Britney et al is a go-to, while a baggier skater fit is also a massive trend that was seen all over the Spring 2022 runways at the likes of Missoni, Vaquera and MSGM. Men can get in on the action too – you can’t go wrong with a pair of Levi’s 551 Z’s, inspired by the brand’s first-ever pre-shrunk jeans.
Still need convincing? Check out our selection of the best low-rise jeans below that prove this trend has staying power…

How much are the best low-rise jeans?
bien, it all really depends on whether you head to the high street or seek out higher-end labels. La bonne nouvelle est, you don’t have to spend a fortune: we found some stylish and well made pairs above from as little as £30, while for designer brands, prices were around the £200 mark.
Where to buy the best low-rise jeans?
This trend is still pretty niche (for now), so we found there was less choice at denim powerhouses like Levi’s – but plenty from more trend-led retailers like Urban Outfitters, which have a large selection of low rise jeans.
We also found New Look to be fruitful, while it’s always worth browsing Selfridges and its range of designer fashion.
What to look for in the best low-rise jeans?
First up: how low do you want to go? Consider what’s comfortable for you, as the noughties wore this trend super low – although thankfully, you’ll find that most styles these days sit just below the belly button, rather than hovering dangerously low to the pubic bone (real talk).
For polished everyday wear, look out for bootcut silhouettes that are fitted on the leg for a defined look. And for off-duty style that looks effortlessly laidback loose-fitting low risers are perfectly on-trend.
