ALEX Scott was seen fighting back tears as she opened up about her new book on The One Show on Wednesday evening.
The former professional footballer broke her silence about her “relationship” with her Lionesses’ teammate Kelly Smith.
Alex, 37, revealed she was “madly and deeply in love” with Kelly, 43, during their secret long-term relationship as young players.
Writing in her new book How (Not) To Be Strong, Alex said she included the segment as it was a “huge part of her life”.
Now, the former Arsenal player broke her silence on the relationship as she sat down to discuss her autobiography – released this week.
Chatting to Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas on The One Show, Alex held back tears as she shared further details about the book.
“I was in a really dark place,” she admitted of a tough time in her life in 2018, as she faced up to years of abuse in her childhood.
“I was so sad and consumed by a lot of stuff. I had a lot of alcohol as well, and I was like, ‘I can’t continue like this’, so I did [go to therapy].”
Getting emotional, Alex addressed her childhood: “I still put that front on like, I never wanted someone to feel sorry for me – so I would always tell people a bit but not that I was fearing for my life.

As she broke down in tears, the footballer stopped mid-sentence to add: “I know it’s supposed to be a light show, I’m sorry guys.”
Changing the subject, host Jermaine then quizzed her on her relationship with Kelly, which Alex gushed over as helping her “break the cycle” of abuse in her family.
Addressing the chapter for the first time, she said: “I am super private and I will continue to be as well about my relationships.
“I decided to write that chapter because I was doing this book and I felt like I’d be cheating – not only myself but everyone else – if I didn’t include that because it was such a big part of my life.
“It’s about me falling deeply in love. There’s so many parts of it that have continued – the relationships I’ve carried from that, and I needed to change, I needed to break the cycle.
“I didn’t know that there are certain parts of that relationship that really have affected me throughout my life.”
It comes after Alex revealed she fell “madly and deeply in love” with her Lionesses co-star – calling the romance a “huge part of her life”.
Speaking about writing about their love for the first time during a FANE talk in East London, Alex said: “I went back and forth on whether I’d actually be writing the chapter.
“But then it was one of those moments, I’m writing this book and I want to tell everything. I thought I’d be cheating you all if I didn’t put that in there. And for me, it’s like that first love story, I fell madly and deeply in love.
“And yes, there’s that heartbreak and those things, but it’s a huge part of my life and I wouldn’t go back and change that.
“Because that feeling of love and that excitement and what it gives you, it needed to be in there.”
Alex has previously never spoken about her sexuality and those close to her said she was open to dating both men and women.
A source said: “Alex dates both men and women and doesn’t label herself as anything. This isn’t her big coming out story but was a chapter in her life that she wanted to include in her book because it had such an impact on her.”
