AN Arctic blast dropped temperatures to 45 degrees below zero, leaving 15million people under a wind chill alert for the coldest air in years.
Monday was the coldest day for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. It’s possible that there will be heavy lake effect snow later in the week.
Gusty winds sweeping through the area will make it feel colder than the actual air temperature.
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning, dicho “the dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.”
About 5million people were under lake effect snow alerts across the Great Lakes. A “mega” lake effect snow alert stretched from the shore of Lake Ontario all the way to western Massachusetts.
The lake effect snow could potentially bring snow to places such as Buffalo and Syracuse in New York and Cleveland.
Severe weather such as thunderstorms and tornados have also hit states such as Alabama, which was hit by a cold front on Sunday that has since cleared and moved into the Atlantic.
The Northeast and New England sections of the US have recorded temperatures as low as 35 degrees below zero.

“The coldest air of the season thus far will arrive for a majority of the Northeast and portions of the mid-Atlantic by Tuesday as Arctic air plunges into the northern US,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Mary Gilbert.
New York City recorded its lowest temperature so far in 2022 a 19 degrees on January 4, said Gilbert.
The highest temperatures in Boston are anticipated to barely rise into the lower teens for Tuesday, according to meteorologists.
City officials in Boston said Monday that schools in the area will be closed on Tuesday due to the extreme cold.
“For the Boston area, I think it’s safe to say that Tuesday will be the coldest day in three years—since January 2019,” said Dan DePodwin, Director of Forecast Operations at AccuWeather.
