WEARING A SPECIFIC COLOR OF UNDERWEAR

In many countries, especially Latin America, people will wear brand new underwear in a specific color to ring in the new year.

If you wear yellow, it’s believed to bring good luck.

If you wear red, it brings love – and if you wear white, it’ll bring you inner peace.

EATING 12 GRAPES

In Spain and in other Hispanic countries, they believe that you should eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight.

According to Atlas Obscura: “Eating one grape at each of midnight’s 12 clock chimes guarantees you a lucky year — if and only if you simultaneously ruminate on their significance. If you fail to conscientiously finish your grapes by the time the clock stops chiming, you’ll face misfortune in the new year.

EATING SOMETHING ROUND

de forma similar, many cultures believe that it’s good luck to eat something round on New Year’s because it will bring prosperity.

The food will usually take center stage at the table during the midnight dinner.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY

Typically, people go to parties for New Year’s Eve and will opt for black since it’s more elegant.

But black is the wrong color to wear – you should be wearing polka dots or white.

Polka dots, like round fruit, mean prosperity while white means good luck and peace.

WATCH SOMETHING DROP

In the United States, most people tune in to watch the Times Square ball drop at midnight. People will even fly from out of the country just to watch the moment happen live.

This is meant to be a visual countdown to the new year.

And no, you don’t have to watch the ball drop, other states will drop cheese, mushrooms, or gumbo pots!

DESTROY SOMETHING

People like to destroy things at midnight.

In Latin America, setting fire to a dummy that looks like someone who made your life hell is a cleansing ritual, but smashing plates in Denmark is good luck.

The tradition is that you’re supposed to break plates in front of the doorsteps of your loved ones. The more shards there are in front of your home the next day, the luckier and more well-liked you are.

KISS A LOVED ONE

What’s the first thing most people do when the clock strikes midnight?

Aside from yelling Happy New Year, they quickly smooch their partner or whoever is next to them.

This is becausethe first person with whom a person came in contact that dictated the year’s destiny.

And no, you don’t need to kiss a partner, kiss your parents or siblings on the cheek.

PACK LIGHT

In Colombia, people take empty suitcases and run around the block as fast as they can.

It’s supposed to guarantee a year filled with travel and prosperity.

THROW WATER OUT THE WINDOW

In Puerto Rico, people believe that dumping a bucket of water out the window drives away evil spirits.

They also sprinkle sugar outside their houses to invite good luck in.
