Police were scrambled to the site at 11am as witnesses reported hearing a “loud bang and now dark smoke”.

A Royal Logistic Corps army vehicle is also on the scene.

Dramatic pictures show black smoke billowing over the hospital.

A photo of a car on fire in a car park has also been shared but it has not been verified.

Merseyside Police confirmed they are on the scene but have not expanded on what the current incident is.

The force said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred shortly after 11am today (Sunday 14 November) outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

“A cordon around the affected area has been established and a number of surrounding roads have been closed.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene assessing the situation.”

The road closures mean part of today’s Remembrance Sunday parade has been re-routed or cancelled.
