Sommige WFH officers are based in areas with the UK’s highest crime rates.

Simon Kempton of the Police Federation said  “pretty much any” probe type could be done with a laptop and phone.

He said “Whether it’s shoplifting or a murder or anything in between.”

Hampshire, with the seventh-highest crime rate of 43 forces in England and Wales, has adopted the approach.

“But when they are on their inquiry days, they could either be in the station or be at home.”
