Elton’s Glasto show to feature A-List pals in ‘mother of all send offs’

HE’S performed on just about every stage in the world over his glittering five-decade career.

But now Rocket Man Sir Elton John can finally tick off Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage — and he’s bringing some pals along to join him.

Elton will close the famous festival next June after years of being wooed by organiser Emily Eavis.

The gig will be the final UK show on his massive Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour and he intends to have several special guests.

I can reveal plans are in motion for some of the biggest names in music to join Elton on stage in one of the most celebrity-packed shows in the festival’s history.

A source said: “Elton knows just about everyone in music so he’s not short of names he could ask to appear with him on stage.

Glastonbury has long been linked with some epic special guests, and Elton’s set will be one of the biggest ever.

Paul McCartney was joined by Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl this year and Elton wants to top that, which will be no mean feat.

“It’s been years in the making but now he has finally signed on the dotted line. Everyone is excited to put the plans into action.”

Elton’s final US show last month saw Dua Lipa, Brandi Carlile and Kiki Dee join him on stage at LA’s   Dodger Stadium.

A second source added that Elton is now considering working on a second collaboration album in time for next year, after the success of his 2021 release The Lockdown Sessions.

The insider said: “The Lockdown Sessions and hit single Cold Heart have reignited Elton’s career beyond his expectations.

“He may be calling time on his life on the road but has zero plans to stop recording — especially when it comes to working with the next generation.”

Announcing the news of his Glasto set yesterday, Elton said: “There is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans.

“They have been beyond brilliant and have supported me through all the highs and lows of my career.

‘Mother of all send-offs’

“Every week I speak to new artists on my radio show and Glastonbury is often cited as a pivotal moment in launching their careers — the festival’s enthusiastic support for the best emerging talent is something I’ve long admired.

“I’ve been talking to Emily Eavis about it and I can’t wait to embrace the spirit of the greatest festival in the world. It’s going to be incredibly emotional.”

Emily, daughter of festival founder Micheal Eavis, added plans are in motion for the “mother of all send-offs”.

She said: “It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night.

“This will be the final UK show of Elton’s last tour, so we will be closing the festival and marking this huge moment with the mother of all send-offs.”

Call for calm on Blackpink mania

K-POP sensation Blackpink got fans so excited they had to pause their show at London’s O2 Arena to beg for calm.

The four-piece girl group were playing their second consecutive sold-out show there on Thursday when they said they could not continue because the crowd were so worked up.

Band member Rose said: “I can’t carry on like this – you guys’ safety is our number one.

“Make sure to keep some space for people in the front.” Her bandmate Jennie added: “London, as much as you guys want to see us up close, I can see the crowd up here getting a little too crowded.

“So I would really appreciate it if you don’t push and if you make some space for air to breathe. Let’s all take a step back.”

The group delivered a stonking performance featuring hits including Shut Down, Pink Venom and Kill This Love.

They will return for their biggest ever UK show when they headline BST Hyde Park in London on July 2, becoming the first K-pop act to do so.

Charlotte’s crush

Charlotte Church has a secret soft spot for Peter Andre and once screamed so loudly at one of his concerts that she lost her voice.

The former child star revealed Peter’s record Natural was the first album she ever bought and she was beside herself when she saw him live.

She told NME: “I had a singing exam the next day, so my auntie bought me a whistle to stop me from screaming and ruining my voice.

“But because all the other kids were screaming, obviously I had to scream too.

“And so I lost my voice for my second exam, but I think I still managed to pass it.”

Akon’s back with TIKTOK

HE had a string of huge hits in the Noughties and now Akon is relaunching his career for the next generation, by teaming up with TikTok.

He returned yesterday with an EP called TT Freak, which seems to have been created with the pure intention of going viral.

Akon told me: “To me, it is the future of music – it’s where music is going.

“A lot of the services that major labels initially provided, they don’t provide any more, and TikTok filled that void as a marketing platform and connecting with fans.”

As with most of Akon’s back catalogue, the EP is sexually charged and peppered with X-rated lyrics.

But he insists he has never tried to use his music to seduce a woman.

He told me: “It’s not really necessary. I am not a playlist guy. I just do what I naturally do anyway. I just allow it to go.

“I have always been the artist to say the things that everyone thought about but never said. I don’t restrain myself on my lyrics when it comes to songs.

“I think when a label has a direction, they will try to monitor what you say – both how and when you say it – but as I have my own label I didn’t have to take orders.

“If I didn’t take the risks I did, I think it would be very sheltered.”

Calum covers George

IN almost every instance I would argue that George Michael’s incredible music is untouchable and should be left alone by other artists.

But that said, Calum Scott’s cover of 1988 single One More Try from George’s debut album Faith is a pretty impressive rendition.

Calum told me of the tribute: “George’s talent was undeniable.

His writing and his attention to detail, his performances – his vocal is unmatched in terms of tone and quality and consistency.

“He could perform and write and produce – he was a one-stop shop. He was such a special person and should be celebrated every day.”

Kendall boot-cuts ex

NEWLY single Kendall Jenner showed her ex-boyfriend what he is missing when she posed in her bra for this racy photoshoot.

The model recently split from US basketball player Devin Booker after two years together, with the separation being blamed on them both having hectic schedules.

For Kendall, that includes the launch of her 818 tequila brand as well as her modelling career.

Clearly she is booked and busy because she landed a deal to front this campaign for jeans brand Own Denim.

This year has also seen her join the family’s new reality series The Kardashians and they are currently working on the third season.

Not bad work if you can get it.

Charli’s XCX-rated

CHARLI XCX topped off the biggest year of her career by wearing this neon green dress for a party in Los Angeles.

The Beg For You singer, left, paired it with pink knee-high boots to perform at Spotify’s Wrapped party, celebrating the listening habits of its users from 2022.

She shared her personal Spotify Wrapped figures on social media, revealing she was her own second most-played artist on the platform, behind Hudson Mohawke.

In March she scored her first No1 album Crash and since then she’s been on a global tour, which she completed in Mexico last month.

Charli has released three albums in the past four years so although she’s been on the road for months, I doubt it’ll be long before she’s back again with new music.

Inbetweeners’ fan fiasco

INBETWEENERS stars Simon Bird and Joe Thomas say the show’s legacy has been a nightmare due to over-familiar fans.

It got so bad that Joe was once chucked in a river.

Simon, who played Will McKenzie in the hit E4 comedy, said: “People came up to me and they felt like we were friends.

“It’s too much, to be honest. I could do with more respect.

“Now that we’re sort of elderly, we are getting a bit more respect.

But frankly, at the time, I think we got bullied. Joe got thrown into a river on my stag do.”

Joe, who played Simon Cooper, said: “That is true actually, which is annoying because I think the stag should be the one being beasted on a stag do.”

The show ran for three series in the Noughties and had two spin-off films, proving hugely popular.

But Simon told the Distraction Pieces podcast: “I had my glasses stolen once by some boys at a train station. Remember during the pandemic that video of Chris Whitty being harassed by some bozos?

“I thought, ‘Welcome to my life. Try being in The Inbetweeners’.”
