Two ferries carrying trucks and passengers were delayed and huge backlogs of lorries built up outside the French end of القناة.

French union baron Olivier Lepretre said the protest — which lasted a few hours — was a “warning shot” to the UK to cough up more fishing licences.

He fumed: “If not, we will cut their access. This is a symbolic action but if it continues we will show more teeth.”

French captains also blockaded the ports of Saint-Malo and Ouistreham to prevent trawlers from the UK and Jersey landing catches.
