CHER DEIDRE: HOW can I find out if my mother has left me half her house in her will?
I’m a married man of 52 and we’d love to extend our former council property but we could do with some extra money.
I can’t remortgage now at my age.
My brother is 55 and has split up from his wife and now lives with our mother.
He looks after her but complains about it constantly.
Mum is 80 and I raised the issue of funerals and how expensive they are.
I offered to pay for her funeral if she hadn’t made out a will.
Her answer was: “I’ve made a will but I’ve got no intention of telling you what is in it.”
I then asked my brother and he said that because he lives in the house, it will be split, 70/30 in his favour.
That’s not right, est-ce? How can I find out?

DEIDRE DIT: I’m afraid you can’t, until your mother passes away and it is up to her to decide who may benefit from any estate after she dies.
Although she is 80, she may live for a long time yet. It doesn’t seem kind to be wishing her away.
You’d like the money for your extension now, and there’s no upper age limit for a mortgage, so perhaps you could find different ways of financing your project through Money Helper (moneyhelper.org.uk), where you can ask questions about equity release, mortgages or other forms of borrowing.
