The 53-year-old tweeted: “Regrettably my cancer has progressed. Am starting a new line of treatment this week & receiving great care from the team at Guys and St Thomas’ hospital.

Unwelcome news but keeping upbeat.

He shared a picture of him and wife Cathy, who he said had been “incrível” as well as their three children.

Mr Brokenshire said he now needed space to recover.

Boris Johnson led a flood of well-wishers from across the political divide and said: “So sorry to hear James. Our thoughts are with you and your family, and we hope you recover soon.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer added: “This is very sad news James but glad to hear you’re in good hands.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and my thoughts with you and your family.

Mr Brokenshire has been MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup since 2010 and has served in Cabinet as Housing Secretary and Northern Ireland Secretary.

This month he was replaced as security minister by former education secretary Damian Hinds.
