Rowling getwiet: “I stand in solidarity with @ForWomenScot and all women protesting and speaking outside the Scottish Parliament. #NoToSelfID.”

A Scottish government spokesman said they had not seen the post.

It came after a committee of Scottish MPs recommended the general principles of the Gender Recognition Reform (Skotland) Bill be approved.

It aims to make it easier for trans people to be legally recognised as their preferred gender without medical proof.

The vote sparked a rally outside Holyrood by campaign group For Women Scotland, with speakers including former Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont.

She told demonstrators: “I’m not saying the committee should agree with everything we say, but they should listen, they should challenge, they should probe.

“They should not dismiss, because in that world of dismissal, you shoot the messenger.

You ignore the message, you make bad law and other people live with the consequences.”
