Police force uses cardboard ‘copswith speed guns to speeding motorists

A POLICE force has started using cardboard “cops” in hi-viz clothing and holding speed guns to try to stop motorists from driving too fast.

Two of the life-sized pop-up officers — nicknamed “Bob” — are to go on duty standing beside roads where motorists are regularly clocked speeding.

The first of the two-dimensional duo — which are understood to cost around £190 each — has been unveiled on the B4368 in Munslow, Shrops.

West Mercia شرطة said the idea, borrowed from اسكتلندا, is believed to be a first for an English force.

Sgt Damien Kelly, who is managing the trial, قالت: “Keeping communities safe is one of our organisational priorities and pop-up cops are simply an additional tool we can use.

At first glance, Bob does make you check your speed which is a positive reminder about road safety in itself.

“We appreciate that motorists will quickly realise that Bob is a cut-out, which is why we will be using him smartly and efficiently alongside other speed prevention activity.”

The new recruit has received a mixed reception.

Brian Buttleworth, of Bridgnorth, Shrops. قالت: “You can see clearly it’s just a cardboard cut-out. This is just a lazy gimmick.”

Jill Chambers, of Craven Arms, Shrops, قالت: “They should be investing in real officers, not cut-out versions. I think it’s a joke.”

But Neil Carr said: “Anything that can help reduce speeding on our roads is a good idea.

This is a cheap and effective deterrent.”

John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, قالت: “These cardboard coppers are hard to justify.

“Speeding is a serious issue, and taxpayers expect forces to spend their cash on catching criminals and putting bobbies on the beat.”
