Strawberries are UK’s fave fruit – where does your top choice rank?

STRAWBERRIES have overtaken bananas to be the nation’s favourite fruit for the first time.

They have topped this year’s table thanks to soaring sales — despite being widely available only in the summer.

Their arrival was even delayed by two weeks because of unseasonably cold spring weather.

But industry data shows shoppers made up for lost time and splashed out £614.5million on strawberries — £26.1million more than last year.

Bananas — traditionally Britain’s most popular fruit — slipped to fourth in the annual table, with grapes and apples moving up to second and third.

Sales of bananas slipped by £42.4million, to £548.9million, the annual products review by The Grocer magazine showed.

The switch was thought to be due to Brits seeking more fruit variety after lockdown — and the price of strawberries being slashed after a bumper harvest.

The Grocer said the harvest was so plentiful Tesco was able to buy an extra 400 tonnes and offer “a kilo for just £3”.
