See if you live in an STD-riddled state as chlamydia, gonorrhea & syphilis surge

CASES of some sexually-transmitted diseases have reached an all-time high, the CDC announced.

In 2020, cases of some STDs reached a high for the sixth year in a row. But officials warn that 2021 could be even worse.

Cases of gonorrhea are up 45 percent compared to 2016, the CDC reports. Syphilis cases are up 52 percent compared to the same year.

In a staggering jump, congenital syphilis cases are up 235 percent from 2016. Chlamydia was the only of the four diseases to decline, by 1.2 percent.

But in that instance, the CDC notes that the decline is likely a result of fewer STD screenings – not a reduction of new cases.

Mississippi has the highest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea, while Louisiana was right behind in the number two spot.

When it comes to Primary and Secondary Syphilis, Nevada has the highest rates.

Meanwhile, New Mexico has the highest rates of Congenital Syphilis.

In all four instances, Vermont has the lowest number of cases.

Overall, data from the CDC suggests STDs increased during the first year of the Covid pandemic, despite stay-at-home orders and social distancing.

While some states, like Louisiana, appeared to have made progress in the fight against STD spread, experts say it might not be true and a drop in testing may be to blame.

“In the middle of the pandemic, no one could get tested,” Patricia Kissinger, a Tulane University infectious disease epidemiologist, told NOLA.com.

“The clinics that were open and that were testing, many of them had low supplies.”
