OKAY we’ll admit it – we have a slight addiction to buying surface sprays, wax melts and candles which all promise to make our home smell divine.
But despite having enough of these products to rival our local B&METRO, we’ve also picked up a few home scent hacks from Tik Tok and cleanfluencers in recent years.
And while we can’t remember life before we discovered this DIY Lenor spray, there are some viral cleaning tips that are destined to do more harm than good.
From putting vapour rub in your wax burner to pouring fabric softener down the loo, here Fabulous reveals the dangerous home scenting hacks you should NEVER try at home.
Although Vicks VapoRub is usually applied directly to the chest to relieve flu symptoms, one mum sparked backlash online after she put in her wax melt burner – and people warned it could put lives at risk.
In a TikTok video which has been “liked” by over one MILLION people, the woman said she used this “life hack” when her family is “full of cold”.
To begin with, the woman put a generous dollop of the ointment – which contains the cough suppressants eucalyptus oil and menthol – in the top of the burner.
She then places a tealight underneath, lights it and watches as the product dissolves into a puddle.
But while thousands of people in the comments said they couldn’t wait to try it themselves, others highlighted how dangerous it is as Vaporub is flammable.
“I did this and almost burnt my house down,” one replied. “Do not recommend doing this – so unsafe!”
Otro agregado: “Please don’t do this is if you have cats or dogs.
“It’s really bad for their respiratory system and can make them really sick.”
“You can buy Vicks candles from B&M for £1,” a third wrote. “Works the same and is safe.”

Sobre el Vicks website, the brand warns against heating up their VapoRub.
The advice reads: “You should not heat or microwave Vicks VapoRub. Do not add Vicks VapoRub to hot water or any container where heating water. Doing so may cause splatters and burns.”
Without a shadow of a doubt, fabric softener is our ultimate hero cleaning product – as well as making our clothes smell heavenly, it’s also a dream for removing smudges from walls.
Eso dicho, certain cleaning fans have taken matters to all new extremes by pouring it down their LOOS – sí, you read that correctly.
Raving about the hack on Instagram, an American cleaner advised “pouring a cup [230ml] of laundry detergent in the tank of the toilet” which will then sink to the bottom.
Ellos escribieron: “Each time you flush, a sweet aroma will be released in the tank, and the whole bathroom will smell amazing.”
If fabric softener is added to a toilet, this means it may build-up and stick somewhere in your drainage
This is because the water in the tank – which contains the fabric softener – will then be flushed into the bowl.
sin embargo, Izzy Shulman – director of Plumbers4U – told IdealHome that the “cortar a tajos” could potentially damage your drains and increase your risk of flooding.
Ella dijo: “We’ve all seen the mess fabric softener can leave in a washing machine drawer. Over time it leaves a sticky film, which can coagulate and block your washing machine.
“If added to a toilet this means it may build-up and stick somewhere in your drainage.”
Instead of trying to make your loo smell great with every flush, the expert recommended regularly cleaning it with products actually designed for toilets.
But in September 2020, the cleaning influencer told her 4m Instagram followers that the way she judges a new Zoflora disinfectant scent was by mixing it with boiling water and leaving it out overnight.
Filming the process on her Instagram Stories, the mum-of-two wrote: “I’ll know instantly [if I like it] when I wake up in the morning and walk into the kitchen.”
After it was posted cleaning tips Facebook page, one homeowner warned: “Can’t believe I’m having to write another warning…. por favor, por favor, please… do not mix Zoflora with boiling water.
“It is a disinfectant, it is not meant to be inhaled. I am obviously not talking about when being used for cleaning, I am talking about leaving it out on a counter all night with the sole purpose of the ‘fragrance’ filling the room/house.”
“If you want your room to smell nice, use a wax melt?”
As other members of the group complained of having headaches and asthma reactions, Zoflora released a statement re-iterating that the product should be used as a disinfectant and NOT an air freshener.
Ellos dijeron: “We do not advise using Zoflora with boiling water as this has not been tested, and could potentially negatively impact the ingredients within Zoflora and the vapour they release.
It is a disinfectant, it is not meant to be inhaled. If you want your room to smell nice, use a wax melt?
“The use of boiling water offers no benefits in terms of the disinfecting properties of Zoflora, and we therefore recommend using with cool or warm water.
“All of our recommended product uses are related to the elimination of bacteria and viruses as Zoflora is an effective disinfectant, and we therefore do not recommend any use which isn’t aligned to the function of this type of product.”
We know that cleaning your loo isn’t the most glamorous chore in the world – but trust us when we say there is no cutting corners with it.
A principios de este año, married couple the Herreras – who have a shared TikTok account – tried out a viral “cleaning hack” where people were popping bottles of Fabuloso multi-purpose cleaner in their cisterns.
A MI novia le ha dado por besuquearse con su mejor amiga en noches de borrachera, the couple were pleased with how the Ocean Paradise scent made their bathroom smell – but it didn’t take long for things to go awry.
In a follow-up video, the TikTok stars revealed that it had caused their entire apartment to flood after the bottle made their loo run overnight.
Ella explicó: “Our bottle lasted a week before floating and knocking the hose – causing water to spray all night long.
“Don’t try this hack!!”
As well as drenching their bathroom floor, the water also soaked into the carpets – which they’ll now have to replace.
“Thanks for sharing,” one replied. “I almost did this!”
Otro agregado: “I was waiting for people to realise how big a mistake this hack was.”
