A SHOPPER has divided opinion with a “money saving hack”‘ for cutting supermarket bills.
But some branded the move a step “too far” after he posted evidence of using his frugal hack while buying his groceries.
Writing on a Facebook page where people share tips on how to spend less, the man admitted to taking a pen knife to the supermarket to cut off heavy broccoli stalks.
他写了: “Gobsmacked at the broccoli in-store today as all of them had stems that were huge and if you’re paying by weight then all that stalk you don’t use is a waste of money.
“So I got the trusty knife out and trimmed them babies down. Haha ok, it’s a tiny tiny saving but it all helps.”
The man posted a picture of his handiwork with the knife seen sitting next to broccoli with short stems, proving he carries out the technique while buying the nutritious vegetable.

But the tip didn’t please everyone, with some calling it “尴尬”.
一位人士说: “Ridiculous! Just grate it and use it in salads/soup/stir-fry.”
别人说: “How embarrassing is this. I’m all for saving a bit but this is downright ridiculous.”
Others thought he was missing out on one of the best bits of the broccoli – despite the cost saving, 写作: “The stalks are really tasty and can be used in stocks or cooked with the rest of it.”

Some people thought the move wasn’t silly at all, with one person saying it was “a great idea for people who don’t like the stem”.
The man did have some supporters, with one person admitting they “do that all the time” 而另一个人说 “Good for you.”
He later told Manchester Evening News he was surprised about the negative feedback, 说: “Why should I pay for something I don’t want or use? I’d understand if it was in packaging.”
