The former Countdown host, 61, recently travelled to the European country to take part in a fitness retreat at Juicy Oasis.

Taking to social media, Carol explained that she decided to embrace her Catholic upbringing by visiting the holy pilgrim site Fatima.

The TV favourite posted a video montage of her visit on her Instagram with Carmine De Martino’s Let Her Go in the background.

Carol explained the history behind it in the caption and said: “So about an hour from Juicy Oasis is a holy site for Catholic pilgrims.

“It’s called Fatima and according to the story, on May 13, 1917. three peasant children, Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia were tending to their family’s sheep.

“The children under 10 years old saw this beautiful woman, dressed in white and standing above a bush. They say it was Mary, Mother of Jesus who is known as Fatima in Portugal.

“She visited the young children on the 13th of each month for the next six months. She revealed to the children three secrets.

“EIGHT MILLION pilgrims come here each year. It is an enormous, beautiful and ethereal place. Many of the pilgrims crawl the final half a mile to the Chapel, the exact place where our Lady was said to have appeared to the children.

“It’s so humbling to see. Some crawl and pray for those they’ve lost, others for illnesses to be healed, often you will see a mum or dad crawling and their child walking alongside them holding their hand.”

The telly favourite confessed that she took time to reflect on her upbringing and paid tribute to her mum.

“Whatever your religion or thoughts on faith, there is no doubt that Fatima holds an incredible power to a visitor.

“My Mum was a strong Catholic, and I was brought up as one too. So along the side of the main plaza there are burning furnaces where you can light a candle and pray.

“I lit one for my Mum (who died in 2017) and one each for my two children Katie and Cameron. Meant a lot to me. ❤️.”

Former Countdown star Carol covered up in dark sunglasses and wore her blonde hair down.

Putting comfort first as she explored her surroundings, she finished the look with a pair of bright trainers.

Carol previously revealed she is on a Jason Vale Juice Master Retreat and showed off her impressive paddle boarding skills in a clip posted on Instagram.

The getaway comes after Carol opened up about her battle with depression during menopause.

She shared her experience on ITV’s This Morning’s Menopause Bus.

“[It’s] such an important thing the show and all the charities are doing,” she said on Instagram afterward.

She continued: “We were inundated with women coming to the bus to talk about their issues and the more we speak about it the better and stronger we will become together.

“I had hormonal depression for a while during the perimenopause. It was horrific to the point of feeling suicidal. I’ve never even had anxiety in my life before other than for a specific reason (bullying or harassment).

“BUT this was in the years when women were meant to shut up and stay silent. Well I didn’t. I sought a doctor as I’d self diagnosed that the deep depression was linked to hormones.

“Go girls….we are in this together,” she concluded.
