He should be coming here off a win after an unlucky tumble in the red-hot Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby on Boxing Day. He was tanking along and jumped the fourth-last well only to lose his footing on landing. That came after a close second here coming back from a long break. He stays well and likes soft ground so can make amends under Brian Hughes.

GARRY CLERMONT (1.45 Ascot, nb)

He went close in a Grade 3 hurdle here last time when the two-mile trip looked on the short side. He looked good when winning over this sort of distance at Warwick three runs ago and a 1lb rise gives him a major chance dropping in class.

PALMERS HILL (2.55 Ascot, triplo)

He has really improved since switching back to chases this season. He kicked off with a good Wetherby win but left that behind with a smooth success here last month. He stays well and looks the type to improve again.
