The Girl Before viewers all have the same complaint about new BBC thriller

MANY people watching BBC’s new thriller, The Girl Before, complained the drama was too ‘confusing’.

The BBC One and HBO Max psychological thriller debuted on the telly tonight, but many viewers were left scratching their heads after the first episode.

The series is based on the novel of the same name by JP Delaney follows Jane, a woman who is looking for a place to rent, but ends up stumbling upon a “rental opportunity of a lifetime”.

She is able to move into a luxurious, minimalist house known as ‘One Folgate Street.

However, there’s one condition, that she abides by a long list of rules laid out by her landlord, an “enigmatic architect”.

Everything turns out to be more complicated than they first appeared.

Jane makes a shocking discovery that reveals details about the previous occupant, Emma, a woman similar to Jane herself.

There are striking similarities between the two women, which leads Jane to question just how much their lives overlap.

The official synopsis reads: “Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery that her predecessor Emma died in the house, she’s forced to confront unnerving similarities.

“As the two women’s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before…”

As their timelines began to overlap, viewers at home started to get more confused.

They also complained the lead actresses looked too similar which led to more confusion, but the bombshell reason for that was revealed in the cliffhanger of the first episode.

“Wasn’t too sure about it [the show]. very slow and confusing,” wrote on fan on Twitter.

Another added: “Its a bit confusing them showing 2 couples in the house at the same time.”

And a third complained: “So who lived there first? The couple or the single girl? Confusing timeline.”

The four-part psychological thriller stars former Eastenders actors and real-life couple, Jessica Plummer and Ben Hardy.

The EastEnders stars play a couple in the series, with Ben portraying Emma’s boyfriend Simon.

Loki and Bafta nominee Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Jane while Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo plays the mysterious architect.

The Girl Before premieres on BBC One on Sunday, December 19 at 9pm. All episode are now available on BBC iPlayer.
