A TRAGIC update has been revealed in the deadly hit-and-run crash which killed a 12-year-old boy.
Jacob Martinez was killed and his 11-year-old friend, Christina Bird, was left in critical condition after a driver reportedly crashed into them in Apple Valley, California over the weekend.
Days after the crash, family members revealed on Wednesday that the young girl also succumbed to her injuries.
The two children were riding an ATV near their families’ campsite, near the Stoddard Wells vehicle area, around 9pm when the other vehicle reportedly hit them.
Investigators said Jacob – who was pronounced dead on the scene – was riding an ATV with Christina when they were hit by a side-by-side UTV, a more powerful vehicle, according to an ABC affiliate.
The UTV driver did not remain on the scene and has not yet been identified.
同时, Christina was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center and fought to stay alive before she died of her injuries, her family revealed on Wednesday.
A vigil was held her the 11-year-old girl on Tuesday night.
An update on the GoFundMe created for Christina was shared on Wednesday. 它读: “Thank you for all the love and support from everyone. This is so difficult to write but I just want to let everyone know that the doctors did their final tests today to see if there is any life in Tina.
“The results were negative. Tina has grown her pair of wings to join her Grandma and Grandpa in Heaven where she is pain-free.”
“This campaign will be combined with funeral services along with any medical and family expenses needed for my sister. Thank you all sooo much! We love each and every one of you!” the update concluded.
The impact of the vehicle on the ATV was so severe it caused Jacob’s helmet to fly off.
His aunt Daisee Montano told NBC Los Angeles that life-saving measures were attempted at the scene but the family instantly knew he was dead.
“We were told that the first person that tried to perform CPR on my nephew turned him around but the only part that turned was the top half of his body because he was so broken so we knew immediately that he was dead,” 她透露.
“My nephew was mangled. He was trampled to death,” Montano added.
“And my brother was weeping on the ground to please help his son come back to life.”
When Christina was fighting to stay alive, her uncle, Ernie Nunez said: “She’s lying up there right now lifeless and trying to fight for her life.”
“She has multiple broken bones, broken femurs, fibula. Her spinal cord to her brain was severed,” Felicia Nunez, Christina’s mother, told NBC.
Investigators are now searching for the driver of a 2021 orange Polaris Razor Turbo S or S4.
The driver stopped shortly after the crash and then turned off the lights before slowly driving away, according to witnesses.
Jacob’s sister told ABC7: “I ask that if you were there with that person, or know of that person who was there … saw what happened …
“Please be compassionate and come forward. Don’t hide them.”
“雅各布: daddy loves you very much and we won’t stop until you get justice,” the boy’s father said in a statement.
“Find these people that just left two children torn up on the floor and the road just to die,” Christina’s uncle told FOX Los Angeles.
