WORDLE players have been issued a warning as copycat versions of the game on the app store could be malicious scams.
The simple word-guessing game is the newest social media and pop culture phenomenon.
The game is simple, players are tasked with guessing a five-letter word, with only six attempts.
After each guess, the tiles change colors to show which letters are not in the word (gray), which letters are in the word but in the wrong position (yellow) and which ones are correctly in the word and in the correct place (green).
The app started picking up steam in October, and as of Monday, it has more than 2.7million players, founder Josh Wardle told NPR.
However, as the game grew in popularity, copycat versions began appearing on the app stores for Apple and Android users.
The clone Wordle games are reportedly filled with ads and could be malicious scams.
According to The Verge, Apple has pulled the Wordle clones from App Store.

Nonetheless, users should still be aware of potential copycats that may appear on the app store.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL WORDLE GAME
There’s only one official version of Wordle and it can be found at powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/.
As of right now, there is no official app on any mobile platform.
Users should be aware that Wordle is not available on any app store, and if they find one with the same name, it is not the original game.
