EMMA Broyles became the first Miss Alaska contestant to be crowned Miss America on Thursday night.
The 100th Anniversary of Miss America was held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut in a centennial celebration like no other.
Who is Emma Broyles?
The Miss America pageant competition was canceled in 2020 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic but re-started this year with Emma Broyles making her debut after winning Miss Alaska in June.
At 20 岁, Emma Broyles became Alaska’s first-ever Miss America pageant winner after opening up about her ADHD disorder and setting up personal boundaries.
In a raw response to navigating social media, Broyles said, “I am real. I have flaws.”
A student at Arizona State University, Broyles is studying biomedical sciences and during the competition, she said she is working toward becoming a dermatologist.
Broyles told ASU News she encourages women to compete in the Miss America program and said it “is the largest provider of scholarships to young women.”
She said women receive more than $45million in scholarships from the pageants each year at local, 状态, and national levels.
她补充说, “Aside from earning college scholarships, young women in the Miss America program have the opportunity to develop strong public speaking and interviewing skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
“Since I competed in my first local competition over four years ago, I have earned thousands of dollars in scholarships, become friends with some of the most accomplished young women in the country, and gained some once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”
What made Emma Broyles stand out?
The Miss America pageant has evolved since its inception in 1921 with women showing off their strength and tenacity.
Broyles did just that when she advocated for the autonomy a woman has to speak out if a man makes unwelcome advances.
“I know in my heart that as a woman, I am never going to let somebody treat me like, because women should never be treated like objects,” Broyles said.
“Women can be angry! We cannot be content with things that are happening.”
Broyles made it through the preliminary round when she talked about her involvement in the Special Olympics.
She said she started volunteering with the organization 12 years ago when her brother, who has down syndrome, became an athlete and competed.
“As a sibling of an individual with an intellectual disability and Special Olympics athlete, I have witnessed the positive impact Special Olympics has on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, their families, and communities,” Broyles said in an interview with ASU News.
How many pageants has she won?
Broyles entered her first pageant in 2017 when she was 15 岁. It was a preliminary Miss America pageant held in her hometown, Anchorage, where she earned the Miss Anchorage’s Outstanding Teen title.
She continued to compete in the Miss Anchorage Teen pageants, winning four more titles before taking a break from pageantry to move on to Arizona State University.
Her break lasted four years before she decided to compete for, and win, the Miss America crown.
