A FORMER Bloomberg News reporter fell in love with the infamous “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, quitting her job and leaving her husband to be with him.
Journalist Christie Smythe revealed her shocking romance with Shkreli in an interview with Sy Magazine saying she had no regrets about leaving her “perfect little Brooklyn life.”
Who is Martin Shkreli?
Martin Shkreli, 39, is a former hedge fund manager for Elea Capital, MSMB Capital Management, and MSMB Healthcare.
He was also the co-founder and former chief executive officer of the biotechnology firm Retrophin and founder and former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals.
Infamously labeled as “Pharma Bro” by the media, Shkreli was criticized when Turing obtained the manufacturing license for the drug Daraprim, an AIDS drug, and hiked the prices by nearly 5,000 percent overnight in August 2015.
Shkreli also made headlines after buying a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, for a reported $2million.
In 2017, Shkreli was charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and was sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
He was also forced to pay up to $7.4million in fines.

He had previously claimed that mental health issues had weakened his immune system and that made him more susceptible to getting the Coronavirus.

District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto said in her ruling that Shkreli had failed to prove extraordinary and compelling factors that would call for an early release and since he is a “relatively young and healthy man,” he is not at high risk for serious injuries if he were to contract the virus.

According to his lawyer, he was relocated to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons halfway house in New York where he will finish the rest of his sentence, which is expected to be over on September 14, 2022.
“I am pleased to report that Martin Shkreli has been released from Allenwood prison and transferred to a BOP halfway house after completing all programs that allowed his prison sentence to be shortened,” his lawyer said in a statement, via CNBC.
A Bureau of Prisons spokesman later went on to add that the convicted criminal was transferred to community confinement overseen by the agency’s Residential Reentry Management Office, CNBC notes.
“Community confinement means the inmate is in either home confinement or a Residential Reentry Center (RRC, or halfway house),” the spokesman said in a statement.
"Mnr. Shkreli’s projected release date from the custody of the BOP is September 14, 2022. For safety and security reasons, we do not discuss any individual inmate’s conditions of confinement to include transfers or release plans.”
On Wednesday Shkreli shared a selfie on his Facebook page writing: “Getting out of real prison is easier than getting out of Twitter prison.”
Who is his ex-girlfriend Christie Smythe?
Christie Smythe is a former Bloomberg News courts reporter.
The journalist said she “fell in a rabbit hole” while covering Shkreli’s 2017 trail after he was charged with defrauding investors.
According to her Twitter bio, she now serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Thinknum Alternative Data’s The Business of Business.
Outside of her former relationship and occupation, not much information is available on her as she has stayed out of the spotlight following Shkreli’s conviction.
How did Shkreli and Smythe meet?
Smythe met Shkreli in December 2015, when she first broke the news of his arrest on fraud charges.

According to Elle, Shkreli stopped communicating with Smythe after he found out about the article.

Upon hearing his detached words, Smythe – who has sold the movie rights to a book proposal about Shkreli – gesê, “That’s sweet.”
“That’s him saying, You’re going to live your life and we’re just gonna not be together. That I’m going to maybe get my book and that our paths will … fork up,” Smythe said.
Smythe responded to the reporting via Twitter, sê, “I realize it’s hard for many people to accept that 1. Martin is not a psychopath, en 2. a woman can choose to do something with her life (which does not affect you) that you in no way approve of. But that’s OK.”
