His role on the show was to stand in as a body double for the show’s main male character, who is played by actor Chase Stokes.
According to the Charleston County Police Department, AJ died after being struck by two different cars as he walked along the road on James Island, which is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Charleston.
The accident was reported at around 2.30am on July 5, but both cars fled the scene before police arrived.

Police located the driver of the second car to hit AJ during a routine traffic stop in downtown Charleston.
They are still searching for the driver of the first car, and no charges have yet been filed for AJ’s death.
The Charleston County Police urge anyone who might have information about the hit-and-run to come forward.

Chase Stokes, who played the character that AJ stood in for, posted a heartfelt tribute to him on his Instagram stories.
“Still trying to process why certain things happen, and why the world works in the ways that it does,” he wrote on July 6.

The show’s creator, Jonas Pete, spoke to the Post and Courier, saying “He was a vibrant and loved young man and we are saddened beyond words by this tragedy.”
