CYCLISTS will need to ride in the middle lane on roads, following new changes to the Highway Code.
The series of rule changes aimed at ensuring heavier and faster vehicles have greater responsibility to reduce the danger they may pose to others on the road.
Why do cyclists ride in the middle lane?
One change to the rules is that cyclists will now be advised to travel in the middle of the road.
The Highway Code says that cyclists should use the centre of the lane when it is dangerous for a car to overtake.
For example at junctions, in narrow sections of road or approaching a roundabout, cyclists should aim to move to a more visible position on the road.
This is known as the “primary position” to protect those on a bike.
Adopting this position in situations where there’s not enough space for a driver to overtake can help avoid the chance of a dangerous overtake that could be fatal to cyclists.
What is dooring?
Dooring is when a motorist opens their vehicle door into the path of another road user, such as another car or cyclist.
It usually happens after a car has parked or stopped, or when passengers exit from their cars, taxis and rideshares into the path of a cyclist.

Is dooring illegal?

What is the law on dooring?
Car dooring is illegal under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the Road Vehicles (Constructions and Use) Regulations 1986.
